Confused, and suddenly very alone, you find yourself quickly striding to the open window and crawling out after Mr. Euss. You want some answers, after all, and he seems to know something. You hop up onto the windowsill and swing your legs out, then carefully lower yourself onto the gravel below. You blink and squint your eyes as your head passes fully into the sunlight outside, but it isn’t long before your eyes have adjusted well enough to see Mr. Euss hobbling away towards the parking lot.

It only takes a brief burst of quick steps to catch up to Mr. Euss’ shambling walk, and you quickly find yourself next to him as you move parallel to the brick wall of the schoolhouse to your left.

You clear your throat. You’re not entirely sure if he actually knows you’re there, the way he’s staring straight ahead, so you clear your throat again, louder this time.

“You think if I wanted one of you little freaks to follow me I’d be out here alone?” Mr. Euss’ voice is dry and dispassionate, as always, but you stumble at the sudden frankness of his words. You realize you don’t know if you've ever heard him say anything that wasn’t some discussion of intra-cellular mechanics.
