The Dreamer, the Killer, and the Reader
A Choose Your Own Adventure Story
Mr. Euss continues lecturing in a rhythmic monotone, completely ignoring your level of attention. He has a deep voice, thick with an accent you don’t recognize, and as he goes through the various microstructures that make up the anatomy of a cell, his voice rises and falls in the same pattern he has used for the past seven months of teaching biology lessons.
You don’t worry about how much you heard of the lecture. That won’t be the different part of what happens today.
You sit, staring at nothing in particular, trying to decide whether the cell membrane is worth its own entry in any notes you might be taking, when a shout echoes in from across the hallway. You blink, momentarily shocked out of your stupor. The whole class sits up a little bit straighter and all heads but your teacher’s snap to the door. He simply continues droning on about the difference between mitochondria and chloroplasts.
There’s a second shout, louder this time, and more panicked. It’s a woman’s voice, but you don’t recognize it. You have a sudden and overwhelming urge to run to the door - to try to see what’s going on. The rest of your class appears to feel the same, as students begin scrambling out of their desks and towards the source of the noises.
