After a couple seconds, the room has emptied. Mr. Euss’ lecture tapers off, and he looks around slowly, seeming to realize he’s alone in the room, besides you.

He turns to you, narrowing his eyes. He blinks. Then, with all the speed of an arthritic tortoise, says, “They found them, didn’t they?”

Baffled, you watch as Mr. Euss walks slowly to the window, painstakingly unlocks it and slides it up, then clambers through with an exceptional lack of grace. He seems unhurried, but you hear the thud from his body hitting the grass below. At least you’re still on the first floor.

You stand up and walk to the still-open window, holding the frame as you watch Mr. Euss plod across the school lawn, passing what looks like the very same Wyrr Duplae you bumped into this morning, sitting under a tree and reading.
